Khoisan language could soon be taught in WC schools

The Khoisan people in the Western Cape have approached Education MEC Debbie Schafer and requested the department to consider including their indigenous language in the curriculum.

Schafer's spokesperson Jessica Shelver says the decision doesn't lie with the province but with the National Department of Basic Education. They approve policy and the curriculum.

Khoekhowgowab is the indigenous language of the Khoisan people and is already being taught in Namibia.

In terms of the language policies at schools, they should be representative of the communities they are in

Shelver says they have requested the National Department of Basic Education to consider this request.

Once it has been approved by department, it will be up to the schools whether they want to offer it as a subject and if they do, they would have to finance the teacher out of their own budget.
