Seven Shoprite workers appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates Court in Cape Town this week over allegations of theft.
The employers have been charged with theft after they were accused of “stealing” tips allegedly given to them by customers.
The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) says the Shoprite branch installed CCTV cameras and found footage showing their workers concealing money.
The company is alleging that this is its money and the workers are saying that this is tips they were given.— Andile Ngqameka, Western Cape regional chairperson for Saccawu
The women staffers at Shoprite's Pelican Park branch were released after being jailed last week Friday.
Their court case has been postponed to September 30.
Saccawu's Andile Ngqameka says that the employees have been suspended and will also face a disciplinary hearing, which the union hopes will resolve the matter.
