Food labelling requirements for home industries explained

Gideon in Melkbosstrand is concerned that the City of Cape Town is trying to kill the spirit of a community that's trying to make ends meet to feed their families.

He says the City is threatening to take away products the destitute produce, like home made jams and chutney, if products are still not labelled with nutritional facts by 14 September.

This little community is trying to make a living, but now the City is being so strict...

Gideon, Melkbosstrand caller

Food label and food safety management consultant Gillian de Villiers says there is a regulation with regards to the labelling and advertising of food stuff.

It states that every food product needs to comply with food labelling.

Unless a jam is making some kind of claim, it would not require a nutritional table

Gillian de Villiers, Food labelling and food safety management consultant

There could be some kind of misunderstanding because there are many requirements when it comes to labelling, but we must always remember there are good reasons for this.

Gillian de Villiers, Food labelling and food safety management consultant

The reason why we want to have these laws is because we want to protect the consumer. It prevents something being sold as something that it is not and prevents food being contaminated.
