Dr Kevin Alexandra of the Hair loss clinic explains why you may lose your hair and what treatment you can follow for hair loss.

Alopecia areata is a disease that causes hair to fall out in small patches. It develops when the immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. Sudden hair loss may occur on the scalp and other parts of the body.

Dr Kevin Alexandra, Medical Director of the Hair loss clinic says alopecia simply means loss of hair for all sorts of different reasons. Alexandra says alopecia androgenetica is the most common form of male and female pattern baldness, which is an inherited condition.

About 95% of people i treat come to me with that condition.

Alexandra explains that medical treatment can make a huge difference without resorting to getting hair transplants. He says the condition can be treated with a lotion or tablets taken daily. He adds that the treatment prevents the dihydrotestosterone hormone from accessing your genetic receptors.

The reason why people go bald is, because after puberty, as hormone levels rise, the dihydrotestosterone hormone interacts with our genetic receptors causing follicles to shrink says Alexandra. He goes on to say that some people will be severely affected because they may have inherited more receptors.

Ultimately everybody will have thinner hair as they grow older.
