Gauteng Health MEC says psychiatric patients not at risk at Weskoppies

Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa is adamant that the safety of psychiatric patients is not at risk at the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital.

This comes after DA Gauteng shadow health MEC Jack Bloom accused the provincial health department of compromising the safety of mentally ill patients.

Bloom has raised concerns that former Life Esidimeni patients allocated to Weskoppies, in Tshwane, are living in compromised infrastructure.

I was quite horrified by Weskoppies which seems to have a number of buildings that are not in goo repair at all.

However, Ramokgopa says Weskoppies remains one of the best institutions, in terms of mental health facilities in the country.

I did not come across a situation that places patient's life at risk at all.

The lives of these patients are not at all at risk.

She explains that there are plans to build a new hospital, in addition to some wards that have already been renovated.

Ramokgopa says poor plumbing and old infrastructure will be addressed.

The MEC adds that psychiatric patients are under the care of specialists.

I'm satisfied that they have adequate medical care and their well-being is being prioritised.

Ramokgopa made a personal site visit to Weskoppies and says the newly formed Mental Health Review board will also conduct an independent assessment.
