Government has failed us - mother of Gabriella Engels

The mother of Gabriella Engels says she is appalled by the government's decision to grant Zimbabwe's First Lady Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

Mugabe was facing criminal charges last week after she allegedly attacked Engels at a hotel in Sandton.

The 20-year-old victim's mother, Debbie Engels, says the government failed her family.

Mugabe is now back in Zimbabwe after she left the country in the early hours of Sunday morning alongside President Robert Mugabe.

I am appalled that they allowed this woman to leave the country without having her day in court.

She says neither police nor government authorities gave the family notice about their decision.

The mother says she's grateful for the legal team at AfriForum, which includes advocate Gerrie Nel.

I believe in AfriForum's Willie Spies and Gerrie Nel to get justice for my daughter, although the government has failed us.

Debbie Engels

Grace Mugabe will be brought to justice at some point.
