Following a number of complaints from consumers and civil society groups, South Africa's Competition Commission has launched an investigation into high data costs.
The probe will focus on the state of competition in the industry and whether the structure of the market has any impact on pricing, Competition Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele says.

We will look at the entire ownership of infrastructure, the leasing arrangements and the costs related to that.

The real work starts in September, Bonakele says. All stakeholders will be asked to make submissions and public hearings will be held where everyone will be given an opportunity to state their case.
