Gauteng education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi says that he believes all children going to high school should be tested for drugs and alcohol before actually being admitted into high school.
Lesufi says currently section 8A of the Schools Act calls on the department to do random testing and search learners for drugs.

Lesufi explains that at present, with limited resources they are unable to implement intervention measures because learners are often only tested after a drug-related incident has occurred.
He says if quarterly tests are done, the schools will be able to have a profile of the affected learners.

The number of learners expelled because of substance abuse is high explains Lesufi. He goes on to say that some parents aren't even aware they are children are using drugs.
