Pulling of Neo-Nazi websites raises freedom of speech concerns

Some Internet service providers have decided to pull the hosting of Neo-Nazi and white supremacist websites and it has raised the issue of freedom of speech in the USA.

Freedom of Expression Institute Executive Director Tusi Fokane talks to The Midday Report Host Stephen Grootes about the argument that has arisen.

I think it is a bit of a balancing act really.

Tusi Fokane, Freedom of Expression Institute Executive Director

She says, on the one hand, there is hateful speech seen propagated by extreme right-wing sites while on the other hand Internet access is a basic human right and part of ones' ability to freedom of expression.

We wouldn't agree with the take-down or shutdown notices - possibly because it is not being done in a transparent manner.

Tusi Fokane, Freedom of Expression Institute Executive Director

The companies involved are choosing to take the sites down in a private capacity and Fokane argues one should have a proper legal process.

You enter a slippery slope...so you need proper procedures in place.

She says FXI believes anything advocating hatred and constitutes incitement to violence is unacceptable.
