Gender violence in the Spotlight

Sexual violence to receive unique classification in film ratings

Sexual violence against women and children is a huge problem in South Africa and has come under the spotlight over the past year.

In an attempt to start a conversation about sexual violence and limit exposure to it on screens, the Film and Publications Board will classify sexual violence as a separating rating.

Film and Publications Board acting Chief Operating Officer, Abongile Mashele, says exposure to certain media content, especially for children normalises certain behaviors.

In line with reviewing our classification guideline, we've decided to separate sexual violence as a classification element, so that we can have conversations with content producers and consumers to see if the type of content we consume, does not in any way contribute to the scourge that we currently see in the country.

Mashele says that the board looks at the context of a production when classifying it. It also educates film producers to be cognisant of how they portray certain issues.

She adds that the most important thing for the Film and Publications Board is to provide consumer advisory, so audiences are aware of what they are about to see.

Consumer advisory alerts consumers when they go into a production or a movie, this movie may contain certain scenes that may be disturbing to anyone who is exposed to them.
