Stats SA: Three out of five black people are poor

Statistics South Africa has announced that half of all South Africans are living below the poverty line and that three out of five black people are poor, while poverty is almost non-existent among white people.

Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter, was at the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

He says the figures indicate half of South Africans live below the poverty, that it is calculated from the upper poverty line which is living on R992.00 per person, per month.

The study looks at poverty trends over a ten year period from 2006 to 2015.

Overall, poverty declined from 66% in 2005, to 53% in 2011. But has increased to 55% in 2015
