71 000 parents have not yet responded to offers of school placement says GDE

The Gauteng Education Department says parents who have not yet responded to offers of placement for their children going to grades one and eight next year, are causing serious delays in the system.

Applications closed in June after parents were given a month to apply.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Education MEC says the issue now lies with parents not accepting the placements given by the department. Mabona explains that there are over 71 000 vacant spaces.

Come next year, the 71 000 in addition to the 40 000 that did not apply will be without placement in January when the school is meant to begin for the year.

Mabona says they are pleading with parents to accept placements so that the department can tackle those who are still without a school.

He adds that once parents receive a text message, they are required to confirm receipt. He says the placement period will come to an end on 20 October.
