Old Mutual explains why it declined pay out on murder victim's policy

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to Renei Kruger who recently lost her husband after he was caught in the middle of a gang crossfire.

The Kruger's have three daughters.

He went to go drop my little one at the creche and when he came from the creche the gangs were shooting on each other and he was caught in the middle of this.

She says the life insurance claim was denied, citing an undisclosed pre-existing illness.

They said he was treated for diabetes and high blood pressure.

She says he changed his lifestyle at that time and no longer suffered from those problems so it was no longer relevant.

According to Kruger, her husband Brent's insurance company is refusing to pay out on the policy, stating matters unrelated to the claim and cause of death.

Head of protection product at Old Mutual, Jaco Gouws, says the information given by the nominated doctor indicates a lot of conflicting data. He says at this stage they need more information to assess whether the policy should have been granted in the first place.

We pride ourselves in paying almost 99% of all death claims...

Jaco Gouws, protection product head at Old Mutual

We don't look for excuses not to pay customers claims. We are in a business of paying customers claims...

Jaco Gouws, protection product head at Old Mutual

He says, however, when you take out this type of insurance policy they are underwritten. This means the client provides health and lifestyle information and based on that information the insurer understands the risk properly in order to be able to decide if risk cover will be provided.

The information we gathered from the nominated doctor from the policyholder indicated that a lot of the information that was given was conflicting and that we need more information to assess whether we would have granted the policy in the first place.

Jaco Gouws, protection product head at Old Mutual

He says they are open to receiving additional information from Renee Kruger and the doctor to reassess the case and will be in contact with them.

The information currently available to us is not sufficient to be able to indicate that we would've given cover... we are very open for more information to be provided.

Jaco Gouws, protection product head at Old Mutual

Renei Kruger says her husband was the sole breadwinner and now she is struggling financially.
