MPLA maintains steady lead in Angolan elections

Angola held its legislative elections on Wednesday, 23 August 2017. The electoral commission announced on Thursday, that the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) holds a commanding lead in the election results.

Angelo Coppola, freelance journalist and business correspondent, says the official results will be announced in two weeks time once all votes are tallied and confirmed.

Coppola reports that opposition parties are claiming they are unaware where the electoral commission received their data on the preliminary results, adding it does not match their observation.

He goes on to say the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) is likely to contest the results.
