Economist Lumkile Mondi says SAA must be privatised, Vavi disagrees

Wits Economics lecturer Lumkile Mondi says troubled state-run airline South African Airways (SAA) should be privatised because it is not the right priority for government.

Mondi says the government is preoccuppied by white monopoly capital instead of their democratic mandate to address oppression and poverty.

Mondi says injecting taxpayers money into the ailing airline does nothing to alleviate the poverty faced by majority of South Africans.

Since 1994, it is probably over R50 billion that SAA has cost South African taxpayers.

The responsibility lies at the hands of the governing national congress

Meanwhile, trade unionists Zwelinzima Vavi says there is a case to retain SAA as a state-owned enterprise.

Vavi says that the current ANC-led government is discrediting the interventions that should be in place to transform society.

If we sell this state institution because of the crony nature of the current regime, then we must know that we are building very firm foundations for a society that works for the few.
