Harmony Gold vows to continue the search until all trapped miners are found

Five miners were trapped in a gold mine after a tremor caused sections to collapse and three bodies have been recovered so far.

The mine falls under Harmony Gold, and it says the rescue effort will still continue to recover two miners trapped at Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville since Friday morning.

President of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), Joseph Mathunjwa, says the union has been fighting for a living wage for the mine workers because of the nature of the environment they work in.

The mining sector is not a safe environment, workers risk their lives daily. If they are not killed underground they lose their limbs for just a mere slave salary.

Joseph Mathunjwa, Amcu president

Mathunjwa says an application was made to National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) to be able to march for a living wage but their application was denied.

He says Nedlac's interest is only to safeguard business, not the well being of the workers.

The union says workers should not be coerced to work under unsafe environment.

Lauren Fourie Lauren Fourie, says the safety of the mine workers is their number one responsibility.

The rescue still continues and we will not stop until we find the two trapped miners
