Athol Trollip: We are better off without Bobani

The stand-off between the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and Democratic Alliance (DA) continues over the removal of Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani following a motion of no confidence on Friday.

The UDM has threatened to withdraw from the coalition in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

Athol Trollip, Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor says DA leader, Mmusi Maimane has told UDM President Bantu Holomisa that they are happy to continue with the coalition government but are not happy to continue with Councillor Bobani in office.

This is because over the last eight months we've had a number of meeting with the leaders of all the political parties in the coalition agreement.

Trollip says Bobani has been behaving inappropriately and even votes with the African National Congress (ANC) at council meetings. We've tried everything in the book to resolve the matter, but to no avail says Trollip.

He adds that Holomisa needs to decide whether to take the matter to court and whether he wants to remain part of the coalition.

Maimane wrote to Holomisa to say we are not going to reinstate Bobani.

Trollip explains that Bobani's removal leaves the coalition with 60 councilors that support their coalition. He says although they are a hung council, they are better off without Bobani.
