Cosatu looks for candidate to unite alliance

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has already announced its preference for deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa to be the next president of the African National Congress (ANC).

The Central Executive Committee is meeting to discuss how to bolster support for its preferred candidate.

Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali says the meeting began on Monday and will finish on Wednesday.

The congress has yet to decided on how to ensure Ramaphosa succeeds President Jacob Zuma.

We are going to be taking stock, in terms of infrastructure, resources, lobbying plans and branches of the ANC and assessing the situation to be able to plan ahead.

Bheki Ntshalintshali, Cosatu SG

Ntshalintshali admits Cosatu has to learn from and use its history to refrain from making the same error of electing an unsuitable candidate.

He adds they now seek to elect a candidate, based on principles and deliverables.

The person we elect must be in a position to unite the alliances and not be seen to be factional, which in our view is the current situation.

Bheki Ntshalintshali, Cosatu SG

Ntshalintshali goes on to say their desired candidate should also stand firm against corruption.
