Guillaume De Smedt: Taking South Africa to Silicon Valley

This Tuesday, CapeTalk host Pippa Hudson paid homage to Guillaume De Smedt who is responsible for the success of Start Up Grind in Cape Town. De Smedt has a deep rooted passion for small business.

Hudson first met De Smedt when he phoned into her show to share a tale about his rather unique wedding where he enlisted the services of small business and entrepreneurs to handle every aspect of his special day.

Later, De Smedt went to introduce Hudson and CapeTalk listeners to his concept of Start Up Grind, a global community, all about educating, inspiring and connecting entrepreneurs.

As of September, De Smedt will take up the role of Global Community Director for Startup Grind at Silicon Valley headquarters. Start Up Grind started in California in 2010.

We've got five chapters in South Africa; Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein and Pretoria.

De Smedt explains that when they started out they would attract around fifty to sixty people attending their events and have since grown the number to about two hundred people. He goes on to say that their model is open to everybody, from aspiring to more seasoned entrepreneurs and does not require monthly fees.

All content from all chapters from around all the world is posted on YouTube.
