Sommelier extraordinaire: Choosing the right drink

CapeTalk broadcast live from the top of the new Tsogo Sun Sun Square Hotel. Regional sommelier Georgio Meletiou talks about the 14 Stories Rooftop Bar at the newly opened hotel in the City Bowl.

The thinking behind the bar's name is all about the wonderful and colourful stories Cape Town has to offer - and it's on the 14th floor of the new Sunsquare Hotel on the corner of Strand and Bree Streets smack bang in the heart of the City.

Anywhere you stand in the bar, you are going to have a look at 14 different stories - Table Mountain, Lion's Head - I haven't had enough wine to mention the other 12 but there are plenty more.

Georgio Meletiou, Tsogo Sun regional sommelier

They have designed the wine list accordingly, he says. The bar stocks 14 bubblies, 14 reds, and 14 whites.

And just to top it off, 14 cocktails.

What's the big deal about wine?

Wines not complicated - at the end of the day, it's fermented grape juice. people tend to make it complicated.

But he says, certain hotels attract certain clientele (even if they are only 100m apart) and that determines the wine you sell.

At the 14 Stories Rooftop Bar, he says they will be changing the wine selection regularly.

It's young, it's vibey, it's uncomplicated wines - however, there's always space for some interesting auction wines.

What will set this bar apart?

Meletiou says everyone knows the established wine estates. But the trend is to explore the lesser known ones - that make smaller quantities but higher quality.

People are more interested int he smaller unique estates....that's what the trend is. People want to drink a wine that they have never heard of.
