Public Protector, CoCT to sign Masiphumelele deal

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been in contact with the Mayor of Cape Town and city officials to address the appalling unhygienic conditions in the Masiphumelele informal settlement.

The move comes after the community invited her to come see their living conditions with locals saying the city has been ignoring their requests.

Mkhwebane will meet with the Mayor Patricia de Lille to discuss the matter.

She says the city invited her to come and see the progress made in cleaning Masiphumelele and in providing ablution facilities.

The purpose of today is also for us to sign the settlement agreement...

Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Public Protector

There is lack of trust by the community because the city is publishing information that they are working in Masiphumelele... There is nothing like that [going on].

Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Public Protector

As the Public Protector['s office], we will make sure we play the mediator role so that trust is restored.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Public Protector

Mkhwebane says the settlement agreement has provisions, which commits the city to what they ought to be doing.
