In the safety driving seat? Uber ups security

Uber South Africa has been accused of not doing enough to ensure driver safety following numerous attacks.

Driver Kgomotso Tiro, 34, had acid thrown on his face in the most recent incident.

Uber SA's General Manager Jonathan Ayache says they have introduced two new features to improve both driver and user safety.

He says the first feature is called social connect, which is used to verify the identity of a rider.

If the rider signs up and chooses to pay in cash, they will have to link up their Facebook account to verify their identity. In that way, we will be able to authenticate people using cash payments.

Riders don't have to worry, we are not sharing any of their personal information with anyone.

If a rider doesn't have Facebook, they have to chose other payments methods other than cash.

Ayache says the second feature allows drivers to share their trips and locations with family and friends in real-time.

A driver can share their location with a loved one and I hope that can provide them with peace of mind.
