[LISTEN] Talking Sex: 'Bisexuals are so stigmatised in the LGBTI community'

People within the bisexual community define the term in various ways. Some identify as bisexual, while others use pansexual, queer, fluid, or no label at all to describe their attractions to more than one gender.

Eusebius McKaiser sat down with Power FM's Nolwazi Tusini and co-founder of HOLA Africa Tiffany Mugo to debunk some of the stigmas surrounding bisexuality.

Tusini explains that in short, she is bisexual but identifies as pan sexual.

It is just for me a political understanding and growing into myself and my sexuality, realising what gender and sexuality mean. In terms of short hand and for easier understanding in general conversation, I agree that I am bisexual.

Nolwazi Tusini, Senior Producer at Power FM

She speaks of the stigma against bisexuals, within the LGBTI community.

Bisexuals are so stigmatised in that community, so it will be a matter of are you going through a phase? You must make a decision as to whether you are into men or women...

Nolwazi Tusini, Senior Producer at Power FM

I think the worst for me, being a cis-gendered woman is 'you are trying to pass as straight' which annoys me.

Nolwazi Tusini, Senior Producer at Power FM

What I have learned from this - that just because someone has faced oppression doesn't automatically mean that they will then become better at not oppressing other people. That was a big mind bleep for me coming into those spaces.

Adding to the discussion, Mugo says she can, however, understand the misunderstanding and reluctance to identify as either gay or lesbian.

I did do that whole thing, where I was like, I am bisexual and then I was into women, and then I was like maybe I am lesbian. But then I realised that its ok to still have this attraction.

Tiffany Mugo, co-founder of HOLA Africa

A lot of the fear comes from, because sexuality is such a tricky issue, you kind of have to land in whatever you are doing. That idea of bisexuality not landing, you are not committing to a cause....
