Making money out of trash: How Langa locals made thousands from recycling

In just four days, Langa locals brought 5,2 tonnes of glass,1,9 tonnes of paper,1 tonne of plastic and 295 kilograms of cans to the PACKA-CHING mobile buy-back service in the area and, in exchange, received over R5000 for their efforts.

The project spearheaded by Polyco is being piloted in the Cape Town township.

Its goal is to divert at least 750 tonnes of packaging waste from landfills by increasing recycling within selected informal settlements.

CEO of Polyco, Mandy Naude share how the initiative came about.

We went out to say how do we incentivise people to change their behavior and actually bring their used recycling packaging into a mobile buy-back bag centre that will pay them for the material

Mandy Naude , CEO of Polyco

We went into Langa, did some research and found that there is no existing buy-back centre that is in operation in Langa, because what we didn't want to do is displace any business that was already running successfully and bring in another initiative.
