"We need a sustainable solution for access to sanitary products"

Sanitary products may not be taken for granted when shopping - but they are an essential item, and thousands of girls in poor and rural communities don't have access to them.

While there are occasionally drives and campaigns that pop up now and then, Richard Mabaso‚ founder of the Imbumba Foundation which runs the Caring 4 Girls project, says that there is a desperate need for a long term, sustainable solution.

Mabaso says that they currently distribute disposable sanitary pads. While there are products that last longer, cultural and economic factors make it difficult to use them for a number of reasons. The disposable sanitary pads are the best option at present.

The girls that we support are mainly in deep rural areas, where they have no access to water or any form of detergent.

In provinces like Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumlanga, young girls are still undergoing virginity testing. There are many issues around inserting anything in their bodies or even touching the blood that comes out of their bodies.

For Mabaso, coming up with the solutions will take the efforts of organisation, the government and communities. It is an issue that needs to be addressed daily by society as a whole.
