Africa Report: Angola election commission rejects opposition calls for recount

Four out of Angola’s five opposition parties requested a recount of ballots after the August 23 election, alleging widespread irregularities in the process.

The ruling party MPLA won just over 61% of the vote, according to a provisional count.

The independent National Electoral Commission has rejected claims and says this is an attempt by the opposition leaders to undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Africa corespondent Crystal Orderson has more on the story.

UNITA and three other opposition parties want a recount alleging widespread irregularities. They believe some disparities in terms of the counting process and listed a whole two-page memorandum in terms of all the claims they have.

The electoral commission rejected all these claims and are going ahead with the final announcement.
