Eusebius McKaiser together with Jaen Beelders, managing director at Analytico and author and journalist, Rebecca Davis, interrogated the patterns of discrepancies relating to how employees are rewarded and remunerated. These are gendered and include racial differences.

For example, ex Dimension Data chairman, Andile Ngcaba is taking his former employer to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) over alleged "discrimination and unfair remuneration practices".

It is reported that Ngcaba learned in May 2016 that executive directors, including his juniors, were benefiting from a long-term incentive scheme, from which he was excluded. Ngcaba argues that by being excluded from the scheme, this amounts to institutional racism.

Jaen Beelders, managing director at Analytico explains that at his firm they have built a statistical model to produce certain demographic parameters of what certain people earn.

So we are able to say, for instance, what does a white, female Christian from Pretoria earn. So we can go in depth with the data.

Beelders says they get their data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) which does confirm the wage inequality trends in South Africa.

The danger with broad categories is that there is a lot of latent effects that can occur within the economy. With regards to white professionals the medium earnings that we produced at the beginning of this year is 22 000 versus black professionals of 8 000.

Often women end up being paid less for the same work as men because they are responsible for childcare, for instance says Davis. She adds that as a result, they receive less assignments and less prestigious projects based on the assumption of managers that women will not be able to put in the hours that'll enable them to carry out that job to the standards that a man will be able to.

From the data analysis we have done, the retail industry has the biggest gender pay gap.
