"We must resolve this issue with speed, identify perpetrators, identify motives"

The death of former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary general (SG) Sindiso Magaqa broke on Monday. Magaqa succumbed to his death two months after he and two other councillors were shot and wounded in an ambush in southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Njabulo Nzuza, ANCYL Secretary General says they are deeply hurt and devastated by the passing of their former colleague. He says they want the perpetrators to be brought to book.

We must resolve this issue with speed. Identify perpetrators. Identify their motives.

Nzuza goes on to say that he is dissatisfied with the pace of which the culprits are investigated.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, KwaZulu-Natal EWN Reporter has been covering the Moerane Commission of Inquiry investigating political killings in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

When the news broke of Sindiso Magaqa's death, one remembers during that commission, independent community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice, Vanessa Burger said during her testimony that a few days before the trio Sindiso Magaqa, Jabu Mzizi And Nontsikelelo Mafa were shot, there was a collection of money from residents living at Glebelands, dubbed a protection fee.

She claimed that residents are forced to pay around R50 for this protection fee at Glebelands hostel but it is a known fact that this is money used to purchase weapons used in political assassinations.

She also said that it was a state owned rifle used to shoot Magaqa and the two other councilors. She claims this is politically motivated.
