Sassa, Pick n Pay assist pensioner who got paid R400 less

Instead of getting his usual R1,600 pension grant, Cape Town resident Nielen Marais received R400 less.

He was left very devastated by the incident.

Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, Marais explained how the owners of Pick n Pay Plumstead helped him get officials to sort out the deduction, which was made on his Sassa card.

They [PnP] said we going to take you to Sassa, where I got my card deregistered and I put out a defraudation account to the Commissioner of oath and I changed my pin number.

Sassa's general manager Henry de Grass confirmed the agency paid Marais his full old age grant.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that R200 was deducted for electricity and 100 for airtime. Marais withdrew R1,250 and was charged R34 by the bank, he later withdrew R15 at Pick n Pay.

He advised Marais to report the matter to the police and make an affidavit, which was later submitted to Net1 for further investigation and possibly a refund.

Where a beneficiary would have such deductions that they are not aware of, we would like that beneficiary to contact our office immediately...
