The nightmare of flying economy could be over with new innovations by Thompson

A UK based company which specialises in the design and engineering of aircraft seating has come up with a way to make flying in economy class more comfortable. A new seating design and arrangement for airplanes, named the “CozySuite”, was recently unveiled by Thompson Aero Seating in Northern Ireland.

According to the CEO of Thompson Aero Seating, Gary Montgomery, this is the first major innovation to address passengers' comfort. He says past innovations have been to the benefit of airlines and not passengers.

  • The CozySuite offers wider shoulder and seat widths with individual armrests, which need not be shared.
  • The new seats also have rigid backs. This is to avoid the passenger behind from kicking you unintentionally with their knees.
  • The innovation also includes a soft headrest on the side to prevent embarrassing moments of waking up on a strangers shoulder.
  • The extra spacing allows you to recline without irritating the passenger behind.
  • CozySuite also accommodates overweight passengers. They are one-and-a-half times the width of a standard seat.

Montgomery says this new innovation is not yet adopted because airlines are slow to adopt new technology due to a lot of compliance and regulatory issues. The second reason is the passenger uptake, profit and loss issues that airlines worry about. The company is targeting airlines that are new in the market to have these seats installed.
