Uber drivers retaliate against meter taxis after two Uber vehicles torched

The situation remains intense after two vehicles, believed to be Uber cars, were set alight on Thursday at Sandton Gautrain station.

EWN reporter, Clement Manyathela says the situation got violent when Uber drivers retaliated against meter taxi drivers, pelting their cars with stones.

Uber drivers came from all parts of the province, parked their cars near the Gautrain station, some of them holding rocks and attacking stationed meter taxi vehicles ... they pelted them with stones.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

They came together, regrouped and discussed on how they are going to take this matter forward saying they are tired of the police not making an effort to protect them.

Manyathela says an hour before the retaliation, other Uber drivers were told by their colleagues to leave the Sandton CBD because they were angry and wanted to deal with the situation.

They feel they have been failed by the police and need to take the law into their own hands.

General Manager at Uber South Africa, Jonathan Ayache says they've been asking government and law enforcement to step in and help to resolve the matter for months.

He says they understand the frustration some of the drivers must be feeling especially when their safety is threatened.

Ayache says for the safety of their customers they have moved the pick up point from the Sandton Gautrain station and instructions are provided to customers on where they will be picked up.

We have done what we can... The only way this will end is when the police step in and take action.

Jonathan Ayache, General Manager of Uber South Africa
