Police open case of arson and public violence after Sandton taxi violence

Gauteng police say a case of public violence and arson after three vehicles were set alight near the Sandton Gautrain station on Thursday night.

Two ber cars were petrol bombed allegedly by meter taxi drivers.

Angry Uber drivers retaliated, attacking stationary meter taxi cars.

At least one meter taxi was torched near the Sandton convention Centre.

The police's Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says police will remain on scene to maintain calm.

Since this violence erupted we have had deployment of all law enforcement agencies, not only police but the metros and other security enforcement of today, because of what erupted last night we will probably deploy more people

Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, Gauteng police

Meanwhile Uber management has condemned the violence.

Uber SA's General Manager Jonathan Ayache says none of the company's drivers were injured.

He has emphasised the need for law enforcement to intervene.

It has been consistent violence against them for months now and all they want to do is earn an income for their families without this fear of violence and intimidation

Jonathan Ayache, General Manager for Sub Saharan Africa for Uber

Any form of retaliation is unacceptable and against our community guidelines. The key thing is that we find a solution here and here we need policy makers and law enforcement to step in and make that happen without further violence.
