Technobyte: Apple plans to unveil three new phones

Aki Anastasiou brings you the latest in the world of tech:

This week I have been putting one of Dell’s high-end notebooks to the test and I have been impressed.

The Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 is the world’s smallest device to feature both a touch screen and normal screen. It has InfinityEdge display for virtually borderless viewing and gorgeous detail.

The notebook itself is very light, weighing in at 1.24kg, and has a beautiful solid feel.

If you are looking for a device that can double up as a tablet then the Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 could be for you. They are not cheap coming in at just under R30 000!

An algorithm deduced the sexuality of people on a dating site with up to 91% accuracy, raising tricky ethical questions.

The study from Stanford University – which found that a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% for women – has raised questions about the biological origins of sexual orientation, the ethics of facial-detection technology, and the potential for this kind of software to violate people’s privacy or be abused for anti-LGBT purposes.

The machine intelligence tested in the research, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and first reported in the Economist, was based on a sample of more than 35 000 facial images that men and women publicly posted on a US dating website.

On Tuesday, Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will take the stage for the first time in the Steve Jobs Theater at its new campus.

The location represents a new chapter for the world’s most valuable technology company, and the event will usher in a new era for the iPhone.

For the first time, Apple plans to unveil three phones, including a premium model that will cast a halo over the rest of the line, and perhaps over the rest of the smartphone industry.

The devices will not only be exciting for customers but for investors as well. The iPhone represents about two-thirds of Apple’s sales, making it critical to the bottom line.
