Fears that Uber-metered taxi rivalry may affect tourism in SA

Transport minister Joe Maswanganyi has condemned the continued rivalry between Uber and Metered taxi drivers in Johannesburg after three vehicles were torched in Sandton last week.

Two Uber cars were petrol bombed allegedly by meter taxi drivers. Angry Uber drivers retaliated, attacking stationary metered taxi cars.

There are concerns that the ongoing conflict may have an impact on tourism in the country.

Maswanganyi conducted a walkabout in the area on Monday afternoon.

Eyewitness News reporter Thando Kubheka has more on the story.

They have been speaking and interacting with the e-hailing services drivers o find out what exactly their grievances are.

He says over 100 law enforcement officers will be deployed to the Sandton area, as well as O.R Tambo International Airport.

He came out strong reiterating that the department won't allow lawlessness on the roads.
