Banting, the drive behind butter shortage in the world

A company that produces and distributes dairy products, Clover South Africa, recently warned of a major butter shortage in the country.

Chief Economist of the Milk Producers’ Organisation, Dr Koos Coetze, says the shortage of butter is not only a South African problem but a global problem.

He says the current research has shown that butter is not a health hazard but a more natural product than things like margarine and that more and more people are now adopting a low carb high-fat diet such as the Banting diet.

People switched over from low-fat products to full-cream milk. If people are buying full-cream milk, obviously there is no extra cream coming out to manufacture butter.

This is the reason internationally the price of butter is very high.
