Car seat usage less than 10% in SA, says AA

It is illegal for any children under the age of three to travel without a child restraint or car seat.

Despite this, the Automobile Association (AA) less than 10% of parents and families put their children in car seats.

AA spokeserson Layton Beard says parents must ensure that the car seats are suited to a child's height and weight and approved by the regulator South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

Car seat safety advocate Mandy Miller says car seat usage appears to have dropped in recent years.

Miller says more awareness and education is needed about the dangers of not using car seats for young children.

In 2009, Miller says nearly five children died everyday in collisions where they were not in car seats.

Wheel Well representative Peggie Mars says their organisation provides pre-owned car seats for families who find the costs to be prohibitive.
