Vista High School ordered to remove anti-Zionist posters

An outreach project to Vista High by students from Herzlia High School almost turned sour when they arrived at the school to start their voluntary work.

According to Geoff Cohen, Director of Education at Herzlia, the students undertook a community project to upgrade Vista's library, build a playground area and engage in learning exchange.

But to his surprise, when they arrived they were confronted by anti-Zionist posters and slogans prominently displayed in the office window of the school's deputy principal.

When they arrived at the school with picks and shovels to start working on the sports grounds they were greeted with slogans on the deputy principals window which were anti-Zionistic, almost anti-Semitic.

Geoff Cohen, Director of Education at Herzlia

They continued to do the job that they promised to do despite the slogans, I am so proud of them.

Geoff Cohen, Director of Education at Herzlia

The most offensive to the pupils and to us as the school was that 'Israel is a terrorist state that practices ethnic cleansing'. This was clearly put up to offend the pupils...

Principal of Vista High School, Charlene Little says the matter is still under investigation by the Western Cape Education Department.

However, she has apologised to the school and has met with the director to talk about the incident.

I have apologised to the school and I have apologised to Mr Cohen. I have been to the school on Tuesday after the incident.

Charlene Little, Principal of Vista High School

Spokesperson for WCED, Paddy Atwell says the issue has been reported to their labour relations directorate who will conduct the investigations.

Our circuit manager is certainly very embarrassed by the situation.

Paddy Atwell, WC education spokesperson

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies confirmed a message from MEC for Education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schafer, that she has ordered the school to remove the posters no later than Wednesday.
