Ipid calls for crime intelligence slush fund boss suspension amid fraud claims

Police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has asked the police to suspend the head of the crime intelligence's slush fund, Major-General Obed Nemutanzhela, as he faces a half-a-million-rand fraud investigation.

Eyewitness News (EWN) says it has correspondence which details the request.

It’s understood that the police have not acted on the request.

Ipid says in a letter to acting National Police Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba, that Nemutanzhela’s position as head of the crime intelligence slush fund will impede the investigation.

EWN reporter Barry Bateman details the story.

It came through sources in the law enforcement agency that there was this effort by Ipid to have Major-General Nemutanzhela suspended because he is facing this very serious investigation.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

As we understand it, this letter is dated the 1st of September. I did put questions through to police management, they have acknowledged that they have received my questions, they are investigating the inquiry but I have had no response as yet.
