Man turns away several women from his doorstep after Gumtree job scam

On Tuesday, CapeTalk host, John Maytham took a call from a listener who said random women would appear on his doorstep under the false pretence that he was their new employer.

Gareth told Maytham the women were given his address after responding to Gumtree ads for employment as domestic workers. After alerting Gumtree, Gareth says the ad would be removed but a similar one would soon pop up.

Listen to Gareth's call here:

Estelle Nagel, Head of Communications at Gumtree spoke to Maytham to respond to these scam claims.

It is unfortunate that vulnerable job seekers have been scammed in this manner.

Nagel says Gumtree relies on people like Gareth to flag unwanted and fraudulent activities. She says once a suspect is identified their IP address is blocked and advertisement taken down.

In other instances, victims are assisted with reporting the matter with the police explains Nagel.

Nagel goes on to say their huge online community can be detrimental to swiftly identifying and acting on suspicious adverts. She adds that they are also working with the police on such matters on a regular basis.
