The art of Strategic Disclosure or... Lying.

An article published recently in Psychology Today had 702/ Cape Talk presenter Owen Simons wondering about the nature of strategic disclosure in parent/ child interactions. The author of the piece, Why You Lied to Your Parents (and Whether They Believed You), is Psychology Professor Nancy Darling from Oberlin College.

The premise of her article, based on two decades of research, is that we lie for different reasons and as such lying can often be complicated.

When my colleagues and I first began studying lying twenty years ago, finding the right word for it was challenging. We wound up with a descriptive euphemism: Strategic Disclosure.
