Opinion: Stephen Grootes shares his recollection of Zuma rape trial

African National Congress treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize denies trying to convince Fezekile “Khwezi” Kuzwayo’s to withdraw a rape charge against President Jacob Zuma.

A new book written by journalist Redi Tlhabi apparently reveals how Mkhize misled Kuzwayo.

Responding to an article run by the City Press on Sunday, Mkhize said in a statement that he organised a legal advisor for Khwezi who he had never met and had given no directive.

Kuzwayo who died in October last year had suffered public backlash after she accused the President of rape in 2005.

Zuma was acquitted of the charge in 2006.

Stephen Grootes shares some of what he recalls during the case.

I was reporting on it at the time, I was at the court everyday.

Everyone in that case will have their own memory of what happened.

My memory....the lawyer was a man called Yusuf Docrat. I watched Doctrat give his evidence and at the end of the day had a completely different view and remember saying on the radio that actually he had been a decent man who had been asked to go and do a very difficult thing..

Stephen Grootes, 702 anchor and Eyewitness News reporter

Basically he had been asked by Zweli Mkhize to go and help Khwezi, to go and give her neutral legal advise and when he gave that testimony he had actually gone and done that.

You may have got the impression from front pages that Mkhize had tried to get Khwezi to drop the charges from what I saw in court that day and remember, I got a very different impression.
