AfriForum will apply to have Grace Mugabe declared a respondent in Engels case

Lobby group AfriForum is heading to the courts on Tuesday to apply to have Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabe cited as a respondent in the assault case against her.

AfriForum is representing Gabriella Engel who was allegedly beaten with an electric cable by Mugabe at a Sandton hotel in August.

EWN senior reporter Barry Bateman is covering the story. He says Afriforum's court appearance on Tuesday is a formality leading up to an application to set aside government's decision to grant Mugabe diplomatic immunity, which he believes will be heard at the end of September.

Because Grace Mugabe is a foreign national and the matter is being set down to be heard in South Africa, AfriForum has to seek permission from the court to add Grace Mugabe as a respondent in the matter.

AfriForum will also seek to serve court papers to Grace Mugabe in Zimbabwe.

In a twist of events, Mugabe denied the allegations and claims she was attacked by Engles with a knife. Bateman says Mugabe's claims are unbelievable and if indeed she was attacked she would have made mention of the attack earlier on.
