While Taxi operators have distanced themselves from violence linked to a disruptive strike in Cape Town on Monday, a two week mediation process will kickstart soon between industry representatives and Transport MEC Donald Grant.
Grant met with the representatives after busses were set alight and stoned and thousands of commuters were stranded around the city on Monday.
The strike has since been called off.
A retired judge will be appointed to address taxi leadership battles in the Western Cape.
We have entered into a mediation process for a period of two weeks.— Donald Grant, WC Transport MEC
We have submitted the names of four retired judges to Santaco and the other grouping last night and we are hopeful that someone will be appointed by today to try and help the Western Cape Santaco branch to effect the process towards new leadership elections by mid November 2017.— Donald Grant, WC Transport MEC
He says a group of members have questioned the validity of an agreement signed by Santaco earlier this year.
The only way to resolve this is to get an independent clear legal mind to assist Snataco to go through the processes of the election of the new leadership, to find the way forward in terms of how they want to operate.— Donald Grant, WC Transport MEC
