Ocean View activist speaks: We have had 20 murders in 2017 alone

At least three people have been killed in a rash of shootings since the weekend in Ocean View in the Western Cape.

In the latest incident, a local was shot dead on Tuesday in what's thought to be a gang-related attack.

Sharone Daniels who is a community activist in gang-ravaged Ocean View spoke to CapeTalk host John Maytham about the community's concerns and fears.

Daniels explains that because Ocean View is quite isolated it may be why the community's issues are often less known and even neglected. She adds that since the beginning of the year, they have had twenty murders in Ocean View.

We are traumatised and don't know what to do anymore.

Daniels goes on to say they don't have a clue about who committing these crimes and murders. She says they have made several pleas and requests to employ visible policing and installation of cameras in the identified hotspots.

She tells Maytham that only after an incident has occurred do the police then become visible.

I remember at one community meeting, the police we had invited committed to helping us with the provision of a gang unit but that hasn't happened.

She further explains that a trustworthy line of communication would also aid with community members reporting on crime in the area because there is very little trust at the moment. People are frustrated she adds.
