Former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament, Dr Makhosi Khoza shocked many South Africans when she announced her resignation from the ruling party on Thursday.
Khoza had previously been vocal about problems with the organisation, a move some applauded, while others - especially fellow party members - deemed unacceptable. This eventually led to her being charged with alleged ill-discipline and bringing the party into disrepute.
Khoza tells 702 and CapeTalk host, Eusebius McKaiser that she had been with the party since she was twelve years old.
The ANC was not just a political home. I had a very strong bond with the party, a stronger bond than the one I had with my parents.— Dr. Makhosi Khoza, former ANC MP
McKaiser asked Khoza if she would vote for the ANC and without hesitation, she said, no.
Khoza explains that she isn't the only ANC comrade who criticises the party, but some are unfortunately unable to dissociate themselves from the organisation.
She believes the ANC can no longer self-correct- referring to the August 8 motion of no confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma - where members were told to vote for the ANC and disregard voting with a conscience.
She says that vote pf no confidence was her defining moment.
The ANC made it clear who they wanted to defend. The ANC wanted to defend corruption.— Dr. Makhosi Khoza, former ANC MP
Even the way they treated me. I was charged by the ANC study group in Parliament, charged by ANC KZN and fired as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration.— Dr. Makhosi Khoza, former ANC MP
She says there is a President who has brought the name of the ANC into disrepute repeatedly, but has he ever been charged? No, exclaims Khoza.
Since her resignation, many are curious to know if Khoza will find a new home with another political party. She says she has no intention to start her own party or join an opposition party because she wants a party that will be home for all South Africans.
The bottom line is, the ANC became very uncomfortable with me because of the role I played at the SABC and ensuring Hlaudi Motsoeneng leaves the public broadcaster. The truth is, the President was very unhappy with me.— Dr. Makhosi Khoza, former ANC MP
When I was fired as chair of the public administration committee I was going to hold former communications minister, Faith Muthambi accountable for spending five hundred thousand rands to fly her family and friends to the budget vote.
