"She was a light in our lives" - Principal's tribute to Jayde Panayiotou

Jayde Panayiotou, a teacher at Riebeek College Girls' High School, was abducted from outside her Kabega Park home in Port Elizabeth on 21 April. Her body was found on a farm in Rocklands near KwaNobuhle Township in Uitenhage on 22 April. She had been shot in the head and upper body.

On 4 May her husband, Christopher Panayiotou, was charged with her kidnapping and murder.

To pay tribute to Jayde, Sam Cowen spoke to Mrs Woods, Principal of Riebeek College Girls' High School.

It’s been awful. First it was Jayde missing and then we had to deal with that. Then it was her death and we were all dealing with that and then a funeral to get to and also all this media hype. So it’s been a most unusual situation. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced this in all my 40 odd years at school. It’s been really traumatic.

Mrs Woods said she doesn’t think Jayde ever realised that she had a special gift. She also said that she was neat, cute, compassionate and fun which is the reason the school children loved her. Jayde went an extra mile in her job as a teacher; it was her calling.
