Ten red flags parents should not ignore

There might be a number of reasons why your child is acting out, but it will be easier to pinpoint the problem if you are able to notice problems associated with your child's behaviour early on. This could prevent behavioural and emotional problems from developing later in life.

Psychologist, Jeremy Bayer says children often display signs of conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder from infancy.

Conduct disorder is a group of behavioral and emotional problems characterised by aggression and a callous disregard for other people's feelings.

Bayer says parents should be attentive to traits that manifest during childhood in order to prevent delinquency and possible criminal behaviour later in life.

It doesn't happen in teenagehood or adulthood, it starts in infancy.

Jeremy Bayer, counselling psychologist

These are 10 warning signs that your child is on the wrong track:

  • difficult temperament (child does not smile or show happiness)
  • hyperactivity
  • impulsivity
  • inattention and defiance
  • age inappropriate anger and defiance to authority
  • aggression toward people and animals
  • cruelty
  • destruction of property and vandalism
  • deceitfulness or theft
  • truancy

According to Bayer, delinquency can quickly turn into antisocial personality disorder, lack of remorse, consistent irresponsibility, and disregard for others.
