Mantashe weekend tweets a move for Ramaphosa as next ANC president

Over the past weekend, African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe wrote several tweets on why the current deputy president of the party should be the next president of the ANC.

Mantashe tweeted, "If there is a reason why a sitting deputy president can't become a president, it must be explained clearly."

Political analyst and 702 host Karima Brown says Mantashe's tactical moves are an indication that nomination season is upon the ruling party.

Branches are the process of gathering names of people they wish to be leaders.

Brown adds that Mantashe's move is interesting one which he managed smartly. S

Thw secretary general refused to be engaged on the matter and said he would rather wait until nominations are closed, she adds. He has acted very consistently in the interest of the ANC despite there being enormous demands for him to publicly address problems within the ANC explains Brown.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will have a press briefing on Monday ahead of a march against state capture and job losses planned for Tuesday.

Cosatu has been considerably weakened both as an organisation and politically.
