Should parents consider homeschooling their children?

More and more parents are choosing to homeschool their children since it was made legal in South Africa. According to reports, it is growing at 20% per annum.

Homeschool Curriculum Author, Shirley Erwee says that parents don't have to be professional teachers to take their children through homeschool.

She says all parents have to do, is to cultivate learning and hold their children accountable.

Any parent who would like to homeschool their children and thinks it's a good idea should go ahead and do it because it is now a legal option to make and it is usually in the best interest of their children.

Shirley Erwee, Homeschool Curriculum Author

Erwee says most learners thrive in home learning because they are able to learn and progress at their own pace - they don't move on until they have grasped a concept.

Homeschooling curriculum is created with the understanding that the parent is not an expert in the subject, they are self-explanatory.

She says if the child is still struggling by the time they reach matric, parents usually make a plan to hire a tutor to help the child. Parents always make a plan, she says.
