Gigaba launches fresh attack on Public Protector over Absa bailout report

Finance minister, Malusi Gigaba has launched a fresh attack against the Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane over her Absa bailout report, saying she failed to conduct a diligent investigation as required by the law and the Constitution.

He says she made "haphazard, generalised‚ random and hasty” findings.

Political analyst, Dr Sethulego Matebesi says there is more to Gigaba's attack than meets the eye, adding that this may be an attempt by National Treasury to try and prevent what may become a precedent - a precedent where you have a public protector who wants to make major constitutional amendments.

That would have created serious implications he says.

That's why Minister Gigaba had to step in and challenge the findings made by the Public Protector.

One has to be cautious when analysing this situation.

Matebesi explains that the Absa recommendations were actually initiated by the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela after Advocate Paul Hoffman approached her about the matter.

He says he believes whenever there are grievances with Mkhwebane, a private meeting should be held, as making such matters and attacks public will have detrimental consequences for the country.
